Subject: 3D Clouds - Any good methods?

Hi,
Well I've been trying a few differant techniques to get some
realistic 3D clouds and not having much success.
I'll give you a bit of background on what I need to do.
I have to have my camera flying above the clouds and then at a
certain point fly down through them.
OK, here's where my problem starts :( I've tried the method of
layering a few flat planes and using the old faithful fractal niose
textures and this looks quite OK. I can use this method if I have to
but I want to try and get some nice 3D depth to them. You know, when
you're looking at them from above, you can see 'individual' clouds
that rise up out of the main cloud area. I've had a go at making 1
layer of clouds (the top) have a lot of polygons and add a
displacement map to get that extra depth and it doesn't look too bad
either, but the render times go up by quite a bit with all those
layers of transparency. I have one more idea and that is to use a
large irregular shape with lots of polys and add a displacement map
to it using transparent edges, but it's 2:15am and I have to get some
rest :) so I'll be trying that tomorrow :0
If any has a tried and true method to give the effect I'm trying
to achieve that might save me a few hours of testing, please let me
know. Our deadline is coming up and I'd like to give the client some
